Office / Sitting Hours:

• The Tax Collector is an elected position which functions independently from the Township; there is no permanent tax collector office at the UMT Municipal Building.
• Upper Macungie Township does provide a space for the tax collector to meet with taxpayers in the building located at 8330 Schantz Road, Breinigsville.
• Limited office/sitting hours are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 AM - 3:00 PM. Additional meeting hours in-person, by phone, or video call are BY REQUST.

   

  Tax Bills:

  The tax collector is responsible for Upper Macungie Township and Parkland School District real estate tax bills. If you need assistance with Lehigh County taxes, assessments, name changes and/or address changes, you must contact Lehigh County directly at 610-782-3000.

• Current tax rates can be found on the Lehigh County website (www.lehighcounty.org)

• Upper Macungie Township real estate tax bills are dated April 1 and cover the calendar year (Jan – Dec) 
• Parkland School District real estate tax bills are dated July 1 and cover their fiscal year (July – June)
• A 2% discount is offered if the real estate tax bills are paid within 60 days of the billing date. Penalties are added for all bills that are not paid within 120 days of the billing date.
• Due dates are listed on the tax bills.
• Exception tax bills are typically issued on February 1, May 1 and August 1. These bills are issued when there are increases to assessed property values (ex: new constructions, additions) that have retroactive effective dates.
• Real estate tax bills are mailed to owners of record for the current year.  If you own a property and do not receive a bill, you are still obligated to pay the tax, please contact the tax collector to obtain a copy.

 Paying Taxes:

• The easiest method to pay is by check, money order, or cashier’s check through the mail or one of the drop boxes located both outside and inside the township building.
• Tax payments are made payable to UMT Tax Collector.
• Individual checks are required for school and township and by parcel.
• If you are paying by cash, please have the exact amount.
• Metered mail and postage bought online do not meet US Postal Service requirements in regard to mailing date.
• After December 15^th, only certified funds or money orders are accepted.
• No payments will be accepted after December 31^st– see “Additional Information” below.
• Instructions are also listed on the tax bills; payments will be returned if instructions are not followed.
• Should you require a receipt, your options are to include your email address or a self-addressed stamped envelope with your payment or to come in person during the hours listed. Also, you are encouraged to include a contact phone number.
• No township employee is permitted to accept tax payments or provide a paid receipt.

 Online Banking:

• Residents who utilize online banking payments will need to create a separate “Payee” for township and school taxes. 
• Separate payments must be sent for school and township.
• Customers with more than one property need to send separate payments for each property. 
• The tax bill number or the parcel number identification number (PIN) must be included to ensure proper application of payments.
• Payments by bank disbursement do not meet US Postal Service requirements.

 Additional Information:

• Any checks returned due to non-sufficient funds, stopped payment etc. will be subject to a fee of $25 per check.

• On January 1^st, unpaid tax bills are turned over to Portnoff Law for both township and school real estate taxes, contact them after Feb 1^st to make payment arrangements (1-800-561-7989)

What if I write the wrong amount on my check?

It will be returned to you; if a phone number is included with the payment the tax collector will call and let you know your payment cannot be accepted and the reason why.

 What if I postdate my check?

Postdated checks will not be accepted, they will be mailed back to the taxpayer.

 What if I drop off my payment after the due date?

If the payment is received after the due date, it will only be accepted if it for the amount currently due (ex. flat vs discount). Payments received after 12/31 will be returned.

 Am I responsible to pay a late fee if my check was returned to me? 

Yes, there is a $25 fee per check for any check returned by your bank (ex. non-sufficient fund, stop payment, account closed)

What if I did not receive a bill?

Contact the tax collector to request a copy; if you are the owner of the property, you are still obligated to pay the tax bill even if you did not receive a bill.

 I am new to the area. Where can I find the information on what taxes I am responsible for here? (i.e., Lehigh County, Township Tax, Property Tax, School Real Estate Tax etc.)

You can visit the Lehigh County Assessment Website or call the Tax Collector and he can review it with you.
